Talcott Parsons s Sex Role Theory - 993 Words

Talcott Parsons’s sex role theory was based and structured according to a more traditional family structure in that the man was the work-oriented contributor (breadwinners) and the women was the domestically oriented partner (housewives) of the man ensuring the home, children and day to day household functions were tended to. In retrospect this structure was seen to produce future laborers who became contributing members of society which is all part of a capitalist system (Conley, 2013). Conflict Theory sees social life as a competition, and focuses on the distribution of resources, power and inequality. Unlike functionalist theory, conflict theory is better at explaining social change and weaker at explaining social stability. Conflict theory has been critiqued for its inability to explain social stability and incremental change. For example, a conflict theorist might ask, Who benefits from the current higher educational system in the U.S.?† The response is for a conflict theorist accustomed to imbalanced amounts of wealth, is the wealthy. After all, higher education in the U.S. is not cheap. The education system frequently siphons through poorer individuals, not because they cannot contend academically, but rather that they cannot afford to their education, monetarily. For this reason the poor are unable to achieve higher education, they are generally also unable to gain higher paying jobs, and, therefore, they remain poor. Essay Child Labor During The Industrial Revolution

During the 18 and beginning of the 19th century in certain regions of the U.S child labor made up more than 40 percent of the population (Wolensky). That’s almost half of the working population. Since the beginning of time children have always been known to help their families with domestic tasks. Most of these kids worked in factories because they were easy to control and paid less than adults. Kids earned less than half of what adults made in the work force. In these factories they usually cleaned under and inside machines while functioning because of their small size.. That’s how these kids felt as it was described in a article in our history book. They were always in danger of getting hurt or even dying, which many did. It almost sounds like they were slaves by how low they were getting paid. Most of us have never even heard of kids working late at nights doing jobs that today no one can possibly do because they have been replaced with machines from the dangers they carry. Children worked some of the most dangerous factory jobs that existed and they didn’t by choice. They had no choice but to work because either their family was poor or they were orphans. Children most of the time worked in mines, glass factories, textiles, canaries, and home industries. A lot of these industries are filled with dangers that can easily kill them. Orr more succinctly puts this as, â€Å"Sustainability, in short, constitutes a series of public choices that require effective institutions of governance and a well-informed democratically engaged citizenry. † Education and curriculums must be improved to include ideas that are essential to sustainability. These ideas should promote more windmills, more farmers’ markets, and more small businesses. Orr feels that the public must be educated about sustainability and then taught how to implement it. It is then their responsibility to pass this knowledge on to future generations. The transition to sustainability requires more than education and critical problem solving skills. In the quest for sustainability, Orr says we need â€Å"a higher level of spiritual awareness† and references Schumacher in saying that we require, â€Å"wisdom, love, compassion, understanding, and empathy. † These spiritual tools will enable us to stop the self destructive behaviors that we continually perpetuate. Definition of evolution Evolution is a term which describes the process of development from one stage to a newer stage accompanied with few changes which makes it different from its previous stage. It later developed into a theory known as the evolutionary theory proposed by Charles Robert Darwin. Evolution involves change in both internal and external conditions which are di verse in nature. (Bird, 1978) Definition of creationism Creationism is a belief that all things/matter has not evolved gradually all of a sudden but has substantially been created by one omnipotent power known as god which is the only universal power to bring every soul into existence. Definition of creation science Creation science means the development or creation of the universe, energy or life from the evidences and inferences that are scientific in nature .it includes all the scientific facts and proofs that lead to creation of anything which is acceptable for earth and living kinds of all species.(Eldredge, 2000) Scientific concepts in teaching evolution The discussion of evolution in biological classrooms is essential as it helps contributing the present world view of liberal intellectuals in every field. The theory of evolution is said to be very generous by readers and not yet proved to be scientific. Both evolution and creation are not accessible to scientific methods as they deal with only origin and history but in the present context students learn facts on the basis of observation. There are different models of creation and evolutionand they differ in the nature of development process. In creation model it is said that life and its other complex types evolved as a result of scientific evidences whereas model of evolution states that it evolved because of its emergence with non living matter and simpler kinds. There are view evidences for and against these beliefs about creation and evolution model. About evolution it is said that no one has ever seen it happen. If it is actually happening then it should still be occurring and there must be many transitional forms which we could observe. But what we see now is various kinds of species are becoming distinct and no new species has been produced. There is no availability of evidences in the fossil record about the evolution of life from another life or non-life kind. Conclusion From the above stated discussion it can be concluded that either both evolution and creation or none of these must be included as a teaching topic in biological science because they both are inter-related in some aspect.
