This male god was endowed with all the creative abilities of man. In later years, the church also played a role in this regard. Towards 1000 A.D. the Roman Catholic Church in Europe took an increasingly shun and ambivalent stance towards women. Evil was seen to come to the world through women, womens sexuality was seen as unpurified and priests were required to leave their wives and stay celibate. (Mikkola 2005, p.6). The role of women in religion, the church, and the society was also severely curtailed during that time.
